Bundelkhand dacoits flourish with political support

Chitrakoot (Madhya Pradesh): It's a terrain where the forest hides more than it reveals. The inhospitable terrain in the Patha hills of Bundelkhand has been home to scores of dacoit gangs over the last 30 years.

They operate from these hillocks without fear of law. And why not, when they have politicians as godfathers – for instance Samajwadi Party MP from Banda, Shyama Charan Gupta and former BSP MLA from Chitrakoot, Ram Kripal Singh Patel.

They were in Chitrakoot to bless Vir Singh, son of dreaded bandit Dadua who was killed recently in an encounter with the police. With their support Vir Singh got elected as president of Chitrakoot Zila Panchayat unopposed.

“He is a Samajwadi Party member and we are celebrating his victory,” Gupta said.

Dadua's followers ironically believe it was politics that led to their leader's death. The change of guard in Lucknow after the Assembly elections had put a question mark on the future of Dadua, who was close to the SP.
