Death of minor sparks off tension in Uttar Pradesh
(IANS) The death of a minor, mowed down Friday by a tractor, sparked off violence and tension in Uttar Pradesh's Banda district, the police said.
"Agitated over the death of the nine-year old child, the locals took to the streets, torching the tractor and demanding compensation for the victim's family," police inspector Rameshwar Maurya told IANS over phone.
Angry locals also blocked roads in several localities, trying to damage transport buses and police jeeps. Security has been strengthened in the district, following the incident, Maurya said.
Ajit was killed after a tractor laden with sand ran over him in Kailashpuri locality in Banda, some 200 kms from Lucknow, said the official.
"The driver, who has been nabbed, has confessed that he works for a gang involved in illegal mining of sand," he said.
