Congress asks Centre to monitor spendings on backward Bundelkhand region

Congress has sought to raise the political temperature in Opposition-ruled states of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh by demanding that the Centre appoint a panel to monitor spendings by the two state governments on projects in the backward Bundelkhand region.

Responding to party general secretary Rahul Gandhi's plea for special funds, the Centre has announced a Rs 3,700-crore package to bring the impoverished region out of its chronic backwardness. The party claims that the substantial funds from the Centre are being misused by the two state governments.

The region spans over areas on either side of the border between the two states. While six MP districts come under Bundelkhand, it encompasses eight in UP. According to Congress sources, a large number of party functionaries from Bundelkhand have met Rahul and complained of "massive irregularities" in implementation of projects by both the state governments. They have called for a set-up accommodating elected representatives from the region to oversee development work being carried out with the central funds.
