water scarcity in drought-prone Uttar Pradesh's Jhansi region is now forcing
people to buy this basic necessity. There is no water available, especially in
the Raksa sub-division of the district. Villagers are facing severe problems as
their fields are parched and they are forced to purchase drinking water.
Concrete water tanks are not functioning and most wells and hand-pumps in the
area have dried up due to decreasing ground water level. "There is no water in
hand pumps, nor in wells. So we bring water tanks here and sell it to locals. We
sell one box for one rupee," said Sant Ram, a water seller. People complain that
the region has been facing water shortage for many years and the administration
has not taken measures to resolve their problems. "The situation here is such
that people of this village are forced to buy water.
