Seeks Special Package for Chambal Region
Union Minister of State for Rural Development Pradeep Jain on Sunday said that he would approach Prime Minister Manmohan Singh if people came forward seeking a special package for the Chambal region.
His statement came after some participants at an interaction on Ubharta (Rising) Chambal organised by the India Today Group here sought a package for the area akin to Bundelkhand from the Centre. He said the Centre would also look into the special status issue to the region if the three state governments send a proposal to it, when the participants drawn from all walks of life raised a demand for it at the jam-packed hall of Hotel Usha Kiran. "The proposal should come from the state governments (MP, UP and Rajasthan)," he added.
The minister said the developmental activities were taking place in the region adding that the Central government was providing funds for the uplift the area. He said that rural infrastructure was being strengthened in Chambal and Gwalior.
Jain said the image of Chambal region whose ravines were once a home to the bandits has changed drastically adding that education sector has got a fillip in the region. "Now the people have started looking at Chambal and Gwalior with a healthy mindset. Many education institutes, including private colleges, and industries have come up," the minister added. The agriculture yield of the region has grown tremendously in the past couple of years, following better irrigation and rural infrastructure facilities, he added.
