(News) NHRC Notice: UP Govt to submit report of corruption in Bundelkhand
(PTI) Taking cognizance of complaints on farmer suicides and corruption in giving aid to families in Bundelkhand, the NHRC today issued notice to the Uttar Pradesh Government asking it to submit a report within four weeks.
The National Human Rights Commission said the action came following a media
report and a complaint alleging that corrupt officials in Bundelkhand region
were feeding off aid for the dead farmers whose families are still struggling to
get the compensation under several government schemes.
"The Commission has issued notice to the Chief Secretary, Government of Uttar
Pradesh, calling for a report within four weeks," an NHRC spokesperson said.
Quoting the complaint and reports, the NHRC said the government officials are
allegedly taking bribes from poor farmers to grant aid provided by the
government.
The reports also said that 80 per cent of the population in Bundelkhand is
dependent on agriculture out of which 76 per cent farmers are debt-ridden.
"Bundelkhand also got a relief package of Rs 7,000 crore and yet eight out every
10 farmers cannot repay their loan.
