Monsoon made a promising start in the drought-hit Bundelkhand region of Uttar Pradesh with cities like Jhansi receiving heavy showers on Friday. According to the state Met department, the region recorded an astonishing 93 mm of rains, apparently bringing the much-needed relief to the state government.

With ‘monsoon trough’ (the line defining the existence of a monsoon system) being stationed at its ‘normal position’, the region could expect some more rain in the days to come. The trough line, which originated from Ganganagar in Rajasthan, was passing through Lucknow and Allahabad.

Director, forecasting and agro-metrology, LC Ram said: ‘‘Every parameter for a normal monsoon is perfect.’’ He said both branches of monsoon — Arabian Sea branch and Bay of Bengal branch — were active. In fact, the monsoon has covered the entire Eastern UP, with most important cities like Bahraich, Varanasi, Sultanpur and Allahabad receiving moderate to heavy showers. While Varanasi recorded 41.2 mm of rain, Sultanpur witnessed 17.4 mm.

Gorakhpur and Allahabad recorded 12.1 and 3.8 mm of rain respectively. Bahraich, however, recorded a meagre rainfall of 0.3 mm.
