Bundelkhand’s dry run may end with groundwater

The state’s department of science and technology (DST), under the Centre’s Rajiv Gandhi Drinking Water Mission (RGDWM), has mapped groundwater points in Bundelkhand and Vindhyanchal.

In the two-year exercise, the department has found 700 points where groundwater is in abundance. With these mapping data, the department of rural development will be digging these sites for providing water.

Director (remote sensing at DST), Jitendra Mishra, said the exercise was undertaken as part of drought-relief measures initiated by the Centre.

“The Centre had asked us to find groundwater sources. Through satellite imaging and Geographical Information System (GIS) mapping, we have been able to find 700 points in 9 districts including Jhansi, Jalaun, Lalitpur, Mahoba, Hamirpur, Chitrakoot, Banda, Mirzapur and Sonebhadra. Incidentally, all these points are unexploited. We even did a geophysical survey to ensure the data is accurate. Now with satellite imaging, we have pasted the village map on the groundwater map and have a list of points according to the different villagThe exercise began in 2007 and had monetary support from Union rural development ministry.

The final compilation of data was done in early December 2009 and the DST will submit this data to the Centre in early 2010.

“As a test, we also undertook drilling in some points to check whether the imaging is giving correct results or not. We have been able to get success in getting water. Now, the state government’s water resource agencies will be drilling at these points to install handpumps or construct small overhead tanks to tap the water,” said Mishra. es and tehsils,” Mishra said.

The DST will undertake similar exercise in Agra, Etah, Aligarh, Mainpuri, Firozabad, Mahamaya Nagar, Kanshiram Nagar and Mathura.

“The mapping will be done for the entire state but we are taking up districts depending on the water crisis. With this data, the water management schemes can be implemented more accurately,” Mishra said.
