(NEWS) Ninth-century sculptures excavated near Khajuraho, Bundelkhand

Khajuraho (Madhya Pradesh), June 18 (ANI): The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has excavated antique sculptures dating back to the ninth-century Chandela dynasty near the famous Khajuraho temple in Madhya Pradesh.

The Uttar Pradesh government has decided to set up five new agriculture universities will be formed to promote agriculture research in the state.

The new universities will be set-up in Lucknow, Agra, Banda, Mau and at one more location in the state, said Yograj Singh, state Minister for Agro Research Affairs said.

The opening of these five institutions will help and educate the farmers about modern farming practises, Singh said.

Encashing on the inability of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh to draw a socio-economic development plan for their drought prone areas, the Centre has sought their support in creating an empowered authority for Bundelkhand. This authority will have the autonomy to monitor implementation of a special package for region and also execute development programmes.

Even as UP Chief Minister Mayawati and Congress MPs continue to trade charges on the issue of development, the drought in the Bundelkhand region comprising 13 districts from UP and MP has meant that an average of about 40 per cent of the cultivable area was not sown during 2007-08.

The newly formed Kanpur-Unnao Leather Cluster Development Company has lent a ray of hope to the residents of drought-hit Bundelkhand in Uttar Pradesh.

The company has decided to provide free-of-cost training to the people from poverty-stricken regions for working in leather processing units of the Kanpur-Unnao and Agra leather clusters.

Company chairman and Leather Exports Council chief Mukhtar-ul-Ameen told Business Standard that one such training programme had already been completed on a trial basis and the results were very encouraging.

The Bundelkhand region is not only facing the menace of drought, the region is now slowly falling prey to HIV/AIDS.

According to a recent finding of the National Aids Control Organisation (NACO) and the Uttar Pradesh State Aids Control Society (UPSACS), out of the seven districts in the region, three have emerged with a high prevalence of HIV/AIDS cases, with the rest falling in the vulnerable category.
