Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government yesterday suspended nine doctors for turning away a pregnant woman in severe distress, leading to her death.

The state government also ordered an inquiry into the incident that led to the newborn's death just outside the hospital and the mother's death in the emergency ward of the hospital hours later. A compensation package was announced for the victim's next-of-kin.

Tikamgarh, MP: Congress general secretary, Rahul Gandhi paid a surprise visit to Tapriyan village in Tikamgarh district of Madhya Pradesh and spent night in a tribal's house. Even officials in the district were caught unawares about the visit last night, party sources said today.

He reached the village from Jhansi along with Uttar Pradesh Congress president, Reeta Bahuguna at about 2300 hours.

Gandhi visited tribal woman Bhuvan's home, whose husband is no more and asked for meal, the sources said.

(NEWS) New Airstrips to be constructed in Chitrakoot U.P.

The Uttar Pradesh government has issued formal orders allowing the landing and parking of private aircraft on any of the 12 airstrips of the government against a certain fee.

The airstrips in Ambedkarnagar, Ghazipur, Sultanpur, Aligarh, Meerut, Farrukhabad, Faizabad, Kushinagar, Sonebhadra, Lakhimpur Kheri, Shrawasti and Etawah districts are used for VIP movements only at present.

Three more airstrips are to come by the end of this year in Moradabad, Chitrakoot and Azamgarh.

AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi’s ‘surprise’ tour of the Bundelkhand region over the last few days was finally confronted by the Mayawati government in Jhansi on Friday forcing him to stage, perhaps his first, street corner dharna.

The Gandhi scion was stopped by the police from proceeding to the divisional commissioners office to whom Mr Gandhi wanted to submit a memorandum regarding farmers issues and anomalies in the implementation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.

(NEWS) Hair Dye Sale Banned due to farmer suicides

Authorities in Uttar Pradesh have banned the sale of a cheap variety of hair dye after it came to light debt-ridden farmers were turning to it to end their lives, an official said on Friday.

At least 11 farmers have died from swallowing the hair dye in the state's drought-affected Bundelkhand region in the past three months, said Rajiv Agarwal, a senior state official.

The hair dye could trigger kidney failure if ingested, said Ganesh Kumar, principal of the Maharani Lakshmi Bai Medical College.
