North Indian farmers are selling their wives to survive, it has been revealed.
Left without money due to failing crops, debt-ridden farmers in Bundelkhand, Uttar Pradesh, have reportedly been selling their wives to money lenders for Rs 4,000 - 12,000 (£50-150).
The more beautiful the woman, the higher the price that she fetches, it was claimed.
The deals are allegedly being settled on a legal stamp paper under the heading "Vivaha Anubandh" meaning Marriage Contract. Once the new "husband" is tired of the woman, she is allegedly sold to another man.

During five year drought in Bundelkhand, nearly fifty percent of its total population had migrated to metro cities like Delhi & Mumbai. In search of their livelihoods they left their homes with bag and baggage . According to Sanjay Pandey ,national convener of Bundelkhand Akikrit Party ,about 6000 people are leaving Bundelkhand everyday .Nearly ten percent farmers sold their all belongings including land and pets at very low prices and migrated with family permanently.
Tehri Hydro Development Corporation Ltd will set up a 30 MW power plant in Jhansi district of Uttar Pradesh. As per report the power starved state signed an Implementation Agreement with THDCL for the Dhukwan Hydro Electric Project.
As per report, the cost of the project, which would be completed in three years will be INR 150 crore and borne by THDCL.
Lucknow, Sep 6 (PTI) To press for the demand of a separate Bundelkhand state, Bundelkhand Mukti Morcha will kick start a mass awareness campaign in Madhya Pradesh from the first week of October.
"Mukti Morcha will start a two-week 'jan jagaran' yatra from Bundelkhand region of Madhya Pradesh from October 2, then in November another yatra will be taken out from Chitrakoot up to Khajuraho," BMM national president Raja Bundela told PTI today.
Lucknow: In a bid to strengthen the medical education department in the state, the Uttar Pradesh government has sanctioned additional Rs 91.91 crore.
Medical Education minister Lalji Varma said, "To improve medical education system, to impart training to officers and employees and their accommodation facilities the state government has decided to sanction an additional fund."
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has urged the central government to grant early recognition to the Sagar-based Government Medical College.
In a letter to Health and Family Welfare Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, Chouhan said the state government has taken all necessary steps in accordance with the norms prescribed by the Medical Council of India (MCI).
